SmartStep Foot and Ankle: Navigating Big Changes, Alaskan Adventures, and Protecting Your Stride
Hello friends!
We hope you are all staying cool as peak summer heat sets in across the Carolinas! July always seems to fly by in a flash of backyard BBQs, pool days, and mid-summer travel.
In this month’s newsletter, I’m reflecting on why hard changes are often necessary for long-term growth, sharing some highlights and photos from our family’s recent cruise to Alaska, and diving into the surprising biomechanical domino effect that flimsy summer footwear can have on your feet, knees, and back.
Top of My Mind: Embracing Hard Changes to Move Forward
What the Hornets’ Big Move Teaches Us About Growth
If you follow Charlotte sports at all, you know the city is still buzzing about the Hornets trading LaMelo Ball. For years, LaMelo was a cornerstone of the franchise. He’s been a fan favorite and a generational talent on the court!
Trading a marquee player like that is tough. It creates uncertainty, breaks up a familiar rhythm, and can feel like a massive risk. But the organization recognized something fundamental: staying comfortable rarely leads to a championship. To build a truly competitive, long-term contender, they had to make a difficult, bold change.

Change can be difficult, both in the NBA and in your own healthcare routine.
The Parallel in Our Own Health
As a podiatrist, I see this exact dynamic play out with patients all the time.
Change can be uncomfortable. Whether it’s giving up a favorite pair of unsupportive shoes, committing to physical therapy exercises, altering a running routine, or finally addressing a nagging joint pain you’ve tried to ignore for years, making a change takes effort.
It’s easy to stay in our comfortable routines, even when they no longer serve us. But just like a sports franchise looking toward a championship, making proactive, sometimes hard adjustments in how we care for our bodies is the only way to ensure we stay active, pain-free, and moving forward for years to come.

The Lanier Family Corner: Glaciers & Whale Watching in Alaska!
Taking a Break to Explore the Great Outdoors
Our family recently wrapped up an unforgettable vacation: a cruise to Alaska! Trading the southern summer humidity for crisp mountain air and icy waters was an incredible breath of fresh air for all six of us.

We had an incredible time in Alaska, and it was great to catch a break from the Southern summer heat.
We spent our days taking in the breathtaking views of massive glaciers and catching glimpses of humpback whales breaching in the fjords. It was a incredible reminder of how majestic nature is and how important it is to step away from the daily hustle to reconnect with family.

We even got to see some whales while on our family trip to Alaska!
Clinical Corner: Biomechanical Breakdown
The True Structural Cost of Unsupportive Summer Footwear
By July, heavy work shoes and supportive athletic sneakers are usually pushed to the back of the closet, replaced by flip-flops, slides, boat shoes, and lightweight sandals.
While that feels like a natural part of embracing the Carolina summer, your foot contains 26 bones, 33 joints, and over 100 muscles, tendons, and ligaments designed to act as your body's primary shock absorber. When you switch to flat, unyielding shoes, that natural bracing vanishes, triggering a predictable biomechanical domino effect:
Over-Pronation (The Flattening Effect): Without arch support, the foot rolls inward excessively, flattening the arch and putting severe strain on the plantar fascia and inner ankle tendons.
Tibial Torsion (Twisting the Knee): As the foot rolls inward, it forces the shin bone (tibia) to rotate inward as well, altering kneecap tracking and causing unexplained knee soreness.
Pelvic Tilt & Lower Back Strain: An unstable foundation forces your hips to compensate to keep you balanced, leading to chronic lower back ache after a long day on your feet.
In our recent blog post, we break down Sarah's case study. She is a corporate trainer who thought she severely injured her knee at the gym, only to discover her flat summer sandals were causing a structural chain reaction straight up her leg!
