SmartStep Foot and Ankle: World Cup Fever, Vacation Packing, and Beating Summer Foot Fatigue

Hello friends!

We have officially hit the sweet spot of southern summer. Around the Lanier house, our summer schedules are in full swing, the pool is our favorite escape from the heat, and like millions of families around the globe, we have a serious case of World Cup fever!

In this month’s newsletter, I’m reflecting on the incredible athletic feats we're watching on the world stage, sharing some of our family’s best tips for keeping your feet healthy during summer travel, and breaking down a hidden seasonal hazard that might be making your feet feel heavy and tired.

Top of My Mind: World Cup Fever and the Foundations of Elite Athletes

What the World’s Best Can Teach Us About Our Own Feet

If you turn on the TV at our house right now, there is a 99% chance a World Cup match is playing. Watching these elite soccer players sprint, cut, and endure 90+ minutes of high-intensity movement on the pitch is absolutely mesmerizing.

As a dad, I love watching the beautiful game. But as a podiatrist? I find myself hyper-focusing on their feet!

The sheer amount of force a soccer player’s feet and ankles absorb is staggering. From acute turf injuries to chronic tendon strain, these athletes rely on an incredibly precise balance of strength, mobility, and proper footwear to perform.

World Cup fever has hit our household. I love to watch these elite athletes compete on the world stage.

We recently hosted a live event on Instagram where we broke down the most common soccer injuries, the biomechanics of elite footwork, and how the average weekend warrior or youth athlete can protect their feet just like the pros.

The Lanier Family Corner: Squeezing the Most Out of Summer Travel

Prepping and Packing for the Ultimate Family Vacation

With school out, Toni and I are currently deep in the logistics of planning and packing for our own upcoming family summer vacation. If you’ve ever tried to pack for a large family, you know it requires the strategic planning of a military operation!

Between mapping out stops and making sure everyone has enough healthy snacks, Toni and I always place a massive priority on vacation health prep.

Travel is inherently tough on the body; long hours sitting in cars or planes can cause poor circulation, and walking miles through theme parks, sand, and other terrain in unsupportive shoes is a recipe for a ruined trip.

A family vacation can be a great way to relax with loved ones, but make sure you keep your foot health in mind to avoid a summer slowdown.

Our Family's Top Travel Tips:

  • Pack the "Right" Shoes: It’s tempting to just throw flip-flops in the bag, but make sure everyone has at least one pair of supportive, broken-in sneakers for heavy walking days.

  • Keep Moving on the Road: During long drives or flights, don’t forget to do simple ankle pumps and circles to keep the blood flowing and prevent swelling.

  • Stay Hydrated: Dehydration makes you much more prone to painful nighttime muscle cramps in your calves and arches.

Clinical Corner: The Summer Inversion

Why Summer Heat Triggers Hidden Foot Pain and Vascular Fatigue

When the thermostat spikes into the 90s across the Carolinas, most people think about sunburns. But in the clinic, June means something else: a massive spike in sudden, throbbing heel pain and heavy, aching feet.

We call it The Summer Inversion.

When the outdoor heat rises, your blood vessels naturally dilate to help your body cool down. Combined with the gravity of standing or walking during summer vacations, fluid begins to pool in your lower extremities.

This vascular fatigue can put immense, hidden pressure on the nerves and fascia in your feet, turning a mild case of plantar fasciitis into a debilitating summer spoiler.

In our latest blog post, we dive deep into how to protect your foundation when the weather gets stifling. We share:

  • The Expansion Effect: Why your favorite summer shoes suddenly feel too tight by 3:00 PM.

  • Proactive Vascular Relief: Simple, couch-friendly elevation and hydration strategies to keep fluid moving.

  • The "Flip-Flop" Trap: How to choose supportive summer footwear that won’t aggravate hidden inflammation.
