SmartStep Foot and Ankle: Springing into Action this March
Hello, friends!
Can you feel it? Spring is officially on the horizon here in Charlotte!
This month is a big one for the Lanier household. Between basketball season hitting its peak and dance competitions in full swing, we are constantly on the move.
In this edition, I’m sharing my excitement for our local Hornets, celebrating some proud "Dad moments," and offering some clinical advice for surviving springtime pollen.
Top of My Mind: Buzz City Pride
Catching the Fever at the Spectrum Center
If you haven't made it out to a Charlotte Hornets game yet this season, you’re missing out! As many of you know, I’m a huge basketball fan, and since moving to the Queen City, the Hornets have quickly become one of my favorite teams to follow.
They’ve been playing with incredible chemistry lately, and the energy in the arena is contagious. There’s something about the fast-paced nature of the game, including the lateral cuts, the explosive jumps, and the defensive hustle, that always gets my "podiatrist brain" working. It’s a great reminder of just how much stress the human foot can handle when properly conditioned.

My Takeaway from the Hornets
Just like the players at the Spectrum Center, your feet are your foundation for everything you do. If you've been pushing through small pains during your daily routine, don't wait for them to become a "season-ending" injury in your life.
If this sounds like something you’ve been dealing with in the Charlotte region, SmartStep Foot and Ankle offers onsite care where I come directly to you at your home, office, or an assisted living facility. We also offer convenient telehealth access anywhere in North and South Carolina.
The Lanier Family Corner: Trophies and Academic Triumphs
High Energy and High Scores
Our son’s hip-hop dance competitions are in full swing, and it has been an incredible season so far. This past weekend, his team was incredible and took home the Judges' Award and earned the highest score in their division!
Seeing the athleticism required for hip-hop dance is eye-opening. People often forget that dancers are elite athletes. Because of the high-impact landings and repetitive movements, I’m always reminding our son about the importance of stretching and a proper warm-up before every practice and competition.
Fact: Cold muscles are brittle muscles; a 10-minute dynamic warm-up can be the difference between a winning trophy and a season-ending injury.

Hip hop dancing can be great as a workout and a competitive sport.
A Season of Academic Achievement
It’s also been a big month for our oldest daughter. We had the privilege of attending a Davidson College men’s basketball game last week, where she was honored as a Davidson College Junior Scholar for her academic achievements.
As if that wasn't enough, she also received the R.O.A.R. Award Achievement for 5th grade at her school the very same week! Toni and I are incredibly proud of her hard work. It was a joy to be on the Davidson campus, which is vital to the success of the Charlotte Metro.
Clinical Corner: The "Yellow Dust" and Your Feet
Why Spring Allergies May Be Hitting Your Feet
As March arrives in the Carolinas, we all know the "yellow blanket" of pine pollen is coming. While most people worry about their sinuses, at SmartStep, we see a seasonal spike in Pedal Allergic Contact Dermatitis.
In our latest blog post, "The Yellow Dust Season," I explore why your spring athletic shoes might be working against you. Those breathable mesh pores in your sneakers act like filters, trapping fine pollen particles against your skin and causing intense itching, redness, or small blisters.
Don't Guess at the Itch
Many patients mistake these allergic reactions for a gym fungus and reach for over-the-counter creams that can actually make the irritation worse. We also see a rise in Dysidrotic Eczema (tiny, fluid-filled blisters) triggered by the shifting humidity and high pollen counts in NC and SC.
Practical Steps for a Clear Spring:
The Post-Walk Rinse: Wash your feet with mild soap immediately after being outdoors to remove filtered pollen.
Rotate Your Shoes: Give your sneakers 48 hours to air out and use a vacuum attachment to clear the mesh of trapped dust.
Barrier Socks: Opt for moisture-wicking synthetic blends over cotton to help keep allergens away from the skin.
Getting an Expert Diagnosis
Whether you’re a dancer dealing with a new rash or a runner with an "overuse" injury like Sever’s disease, getting the diagnosis right is the first step to recovery. At SmartStep Foot and Ankle, we offer flexible options to fit your busy spring schedule:
Onsite Visits: For my Charlotte Metro patients, I can come directly to your home to perform a physical exam and help rule out infections immediately.
Telehealth Consults: Perfect for a quick visual inspection of a rash or injury from anywhere in North or South Carolina.
