SmartStep Foot and Ankle: Milestones and Mobile Post-Op Care
Hello friends!
As we cross the threshold into late May, the countdown to the end of the school year is officially on! Around the Lanier household, this time of year is a beautiful, chaotic whirlwind. We are preparing for summer schedules, celebrating academic promotions, and cheering our kids on as they leap into new sports, leadership roles, and arts performances.
In this month’s newsletter, I'm reflecting on some major family milestones, sharing updates from our active crew, and discussing a medical "paradox" that many foot and ankle surgery patients face during their recovery.
Top of My Mind: Navigating Major Life Transitions
Keeping Our Foundations Steady Through Change
If you have children or grandchildren, you know how bittersweet the end of a school year can be. This year hits especially close to home for Toni and me. Our son is preparing to transition to high school in the fall, and our oldest daughter is moving up to middle school.
As parents, we’re feeling that familiar mix of pride and mild panic. Where does the time go? For our kids, these transitions represent major shifts, socially, academically, and emotionally. They are stepping out of their comfort zones, finding their identities, and taking on more independence.

Graduation and the changes that come along with it are bittersweet for parents, but Toni and I are so proud!
My Takeaway as a Dad & Podiatrist
My takeaway as both a dad and a podiatrist is that transitions require a strong, steady foundation. Just like we prepare our children mentally and emotionally for the bigger hallways of middle and high school, we must also ensure their physical foundations are protected as they take on heavier sports schedules and rapid growth spurts.
The Lanier Family Corner: Summer Prep & Rising Leaders
Our kids are keeping us on our toes as summer approaches with a fantastic mix of athletic achievements, leadership milestones, and creative passions:

Between new school adventures, horses, martial arts, and gymnastics, there’s never a dull moment in the Lanier household.
Tae Kwon Do Leadership: Our oldest daughter is truly excelling in tae kwon do! She recently took on a Junior Leadership position, which means she now gets to help instruct some of the lower belts. It is incredibly rewarding to watch her cultivate her teaching voice. She’s also continuing to perform and compete with the Demonstration Team at local events and tournaments.
The Big Leap to High School & Center Stage: Our son is still deeply dedicated to his dancing, but lately, he’s been sharing those talents on stage in his school musical! Balancing rehearsals, dance competitions, and the impending jump to high school has been a great challenge that he’s handling beautifully.
A New Equestrian Adventure: Our middle daughter is pushing her boundaries this season by trying out a brand-new activity: horseback riding! She is absolutely loving the experience of learning to care for and ride these majestic animals.
Back to the Mat: Our youngest daughter has officially returned to her first love: gymnastics! The house has been filled with cartwheels, flips, and endless energy as she gets back into the rhythm of the gym.
Clinical Corner: Is It Just a Stub or a Fracture?
Why "Just Buddy Taping It" Could Cost You Months of Pain
We’ve all heard it, and perhaps even said it ourselves: "There’s nothing a doctor can do for a broken toe anyway." At SmartStep, we hear this frequently, and it is one of the most dangerous myths in podiatry.
While "buddy taping" is a common home remedy, using it on an undiagnosed joint fracture, a rotated bone, or a displaced break can lead to chronic arthritis, permanent deformity, or a painful failure to heal.
In fact, we recently treated a runner in Raleigh who assumed her coffee-table stub was fine to tape. Because she didn't get a professional evaluation, an undiagnosed joint fracture worsened under the stress of running, ultimately costing her months of pain and a surgical referral.
Don't guess with your mobility. In a recent blog post, we share:
The Virtual Diagnostic Toolkit: How we use live video to check your "pipes and wires" (nerves and blood vessels) from your couch.
The Nail-Level Alignment Check: A quick visual trick to spot hidden, dangerous bone rotation.
Hassle-Free Care: How we coordinate local X-rays and offer in-home splinting so you can skip the crowded ER.
Connecting With Us: Hassle-Free Summer Care
With summer vacations and sports camps right around the corner, don't let foot pain or post-op recovery put your plans on hold.
Stubbed a Toe? If you or your kids suffer an impact injury, don't play the guessing game. Schedule a quick telehealth check-in to ensure it heals correctly the first time.
Telehealth Consultations: Our virtual clinic provides expert acute care and diagnostic coordination across both North and South Carolina.
Onsite Care: Live in the Charlotte Metro? Skip the travel entirely and let us bring specialized podiatry care directly to your home, workplace, or community.
Wishing you all a safe, active, and wonderful transition into the summer season!
